Punjab (the land of five rivers) is the biggest land area of Pakistan and is popularly known for its culture. It shares most of its cultural and carnival values with Indian culture. According to population, 56% of the total population of the country is situated in Punjab Province. It has a total of 36 districts and contributes approximately 50-60 % of the economy.Punjabi Culture is one of the oldest in world history, dating from ancient antiquity to the modern era. The scope, history, complexity and density of the culture are vast. Some of the main areas of the Punjabi culture include: Punjabi cuisine, philosophy, poetry, artistry, music, architecture, traditions and values and history. Some cities of Punjab have more importance for Sikh community from India. The founder of Sikh religion was born in Nankana Sahib, a district of Punjab so Sikh from different parts of world come and visits Punjab. Jahngir tomb and Badshahi Masjid in Lahore are the important places of Pakistan. Data Sahib is very scared place in Punjab and most of the people come and visit Data sahib every year.Costumes of Punjab are an indication of the bright and vibrant culture and lifestyle of the people.
In punjab Kurta-Pajama, consisting of two pieces of garments, is one of the basic clothing of the Indian men. The first garment is a kurta that is like a loose long shirt almost reaching the knees, whereas the second one is the pajama or pyjama, which is a lightweight drawstring trouser. Though mostly worn on formal occasions, kurta pajama can also be worn casually. Infact, there are many Indian men who wear this dress as their sleepwear.The costumes are a mix of colours, comfort and beauty and Punjab is well known for the use of phulkari(embroidery) in its costumes. In most of the villages of Punjab men wear Pagri(turban), dhoti/lacha, kurta, khusa. Women wear gharara, or choridar pajama or colorful shalwar kameez, paranda, choli/duppata, khusa, kola puri chappal or tillay wali jutti. Whereas in urban areas of Punjab men and women follow latest trends and fashion, generally they wear different styles of shalwar kameez.
The term 'pyjama' crept into the English language from Hindustani, a language from which Urdu and Hindi originated. The word originally derives from the Persian word 'Payjama' meaning 'leg garment'. It was due to the British colonialization of India that the term 'pajama' and the dress spread to other parts of the world. In India, one will often find politicians wearing white starched Kurta Pajama. As a tradition, civilians wear this dress during festivities and other special occasions like holi, religious ceremony, etc.As a dress, the coat fits close to the body, and is fastened in the front with buttons, extending to slightly below knee-length. They are usually embroidered or detailed in some way and nearly all Pakistani grooms (and now many Indians too) wear them at their weddings.The dhoti is associated by many with Mahatma Gandhi, who invariably wore one on public occasions.A Jodhpuri Suit is blend of Indian and western aesthetics. Also known as prince's ensemble, it is much like an English suit, with a coat and a trouser, at times accompanied by an inner jacket and suited for occasions like weddings and formal gatherings.
The dhoti is basically a rectangular piece of cloth, wrapped in a complex manner about the waist and legs and is usually white or cream in color, though black and darker hues are often used to create more vivid ensembles. Celebrating India's diversity, there are indeed more than 60 different ways of wearing it. In North India for example, it is worn with a Kurta on top, the combination known simply as 'Dhoti Kurta'.
The kameez is usually cut straight and flat; older kameez use traditional cuts, as shown in the illustration above. Modern kameez are more likely to have European-inspired set-in sleeves. The tailor's taste and skill are usually displayed, not in the overall cut, but in the shape of the neckline and the decoration of the kameez. Modern versions of the feminine kameez can be much less modest than traditional versions. The kameez may be cut with a deep neckline, sewn in diaphanous fabrics, or styled in cap-sleeve or sleeveless designs. The kameez side seams may be split up to the thigh or even the waistline, and it may be worn with the salwar slung low on the hips. When a woman wears The Shalwar kameez is sometimes known as Punjabi suit.For gentlemen and guys, this collection consists of long and medium length shirts and stylish shalwar. This collection comprises kurtas, shalwar kameez for gentlemen and guys. This collection gives a traditional touch. Bright and lively coluors are used. Dresses are adorned with ethnic embroidery.
