The importance of the Kurta Pyjama and the Salwar Kameez as a traditional Indian clothing is not only that it trascends age - a three year old can wear it and so can an eighty old grandmother- but it is also indisputably the only unisex traditional clothing in the Indian sub continent.Kurta-Pajama, consisting of two pieces of garments, is one of the basic clothing of the Indian men. The first garment is a kurta that is like a loose long shirt almost reaching the knees, whereas the second one is the pajama or pyjama, which is a lightweight drawstring trouser. Though mostly worn on formal occasions, kurta pajama can also be worn casually. Infact, there are many Indian men who wear this dress as their sleepwear. The term 'pyjama' crept into the English language from Hindustani, a language from which Urdu and Hindi originated. The word originally derives from the Persian word 'Payjama' meaning 'leg garment'. It was due to the British colonialization of India that the term 'pajama' and the dress spread to other parts of the world. In India, one will often find politicians wearing white starched Kurta Pajama. As a tradition, civilians wear this dress during festivities and other special occasions like holi, religious ceremony, etc.Only soft material fabrics are used for making kurta pajama as it is supposed to be a comfortable loose fitting dress. Though good quality cotton is the most common material used for making kurta pajama, other fabrics like silk and satin are also used. Normally adults prefer wearing the kurta and pajama in neutral shades, as they give a very dignified look. Children, on the other hand, wear this dress in varied hues and patterns. Kolhapuri chappals are the most preferred footwear for this type of attire.Kurta is a term used to refer to a long loose shirt, the length of which falls below or may be just above the knees of the wearer. In the olden times, it was primarily worn by men, but today, it has become a unisex dress that both men and women can wear. Depending on one's personal preference, kurta can be teamed with churidar as well as loose fit salwar. In the contemporary times, youngsters don kurta along with a funky pair of jeans. To know more about Indian kurta, read on.Kurta is a very flexible dress that can be worn on formal as well as informal occasions. You can even wear them at work. Most Indian men prefer wearing kurta pajama during the night. Well, it is due to its extreme comfort that it has become a popular choice amongst the other nightwear available. Traditional kurta pyjamas have been increasingly gaining momentum amongst the youngsters, who prefer wearing them in their informal social gatherings, with the basic idea of maintaining a distinctive style of their own.An interesting thing about kurta is that its sleeves do not narrow down (as in the case of most of the sleeves designed in the western style) and fall straight to the wrist. A kurta does not have cuffed sleeves and its side seams are left open for the easy movement of the wearer. The traditional kurtas do not have any collar and their openings are usually centered on the chest. However, the modern kurtas have undergone a major transformation and have stand up collars such as the Nehru collar. There is an amazing variety of kurtas and pajama and are available at retail outlets, differing in their quality and weaving style. During the summer season, kurtas made up of light silk and cotton are in demand. While for winters, people usually look for heavy fabrics such as wool, Khadi silk or may a handspun. Buttons used in the designing are mostly wooden or plastic. Unlike other pieces of cloth, the buttons are not sewn; rather they are fastened into the cloth as per desire. These days, you can find real beautiful buttons in the market. Some of these buttons are even adorned with jewels and thus are a bit expensive. Thus, kurta is one of the trendiest pieces of clothing in today's times that is well liked by almost all the people. In some parts of India, saree is the only acceptable dress but it comes in no way near to the comfort and flexibility quotient of the salwar kameez or the kurta pyjama. Airy, capacious, pliable and simple, you can wear it in a jiffy unlike the saree which needs several touch-ups to get the right look. Don't get me wrong, I love the saree but the salwar kameez is a masterpiece in comfort. It covers you naturally in an easy, fluid way without having to bother about a slippery palla or peek-a-boo saree contours. Finally, the liberty of sitting as you please, (a logistical nightmare if you are wearing a short skirt and do not possess either the legs or the unabashed audacity of Sharon Stone) is the clincher.Men in the northern part of India especially Punjab and Kasmir and those in Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan wear different variants of this dress. In Pakistan and other Muslim nations of the Indian sub continent, the Salwar Kameez is usually referred to as the Pathani and worn by rural people and city-dwellers alike. These are long kameez(shirts),collared, usually of single color, often in silk and embroidered and worn over loose salwars pants.
